What is an eyebrow transplant?

Eyebrow implantation is a hair restoration procedure chosen by individuals who have lost or thinned eyebrows to enhance their facial appearance. Eyebrow implantation is similar to hair transplantation. The cost of the procedure varies depending on the extent of hair loss. Eyebrow implantation is a cosmetic procedure that involves transplanting hair follicles to the eyebrow area to enhance its thickness and appearance. This method is often used for people who have thin or sparse eyebrows owing to a variety of reasons such as over-plucking, genetical background, stroke or medical conditions.

Natural Eyebrow Transplantation: A Step-by-Step Guide

Natural eyebrow transplant is a surgical procedure which can help individuals who have lost or thinned eyebrows to have better and more natural eyebrows. This method is usually performed on people who have experienced hair loss in their eyebrows due to various reasons such as over-plucking, scarring or underlying medical conditions. Here are the steps to eyebrow transplantation:

Consultation

Begin by scheduling a consultation with an experienced hair transplant surgeon. During the consultation, you can discuss your goals, expectations, and suitability for the procedure. The surgeon examines your eyebrows, evaluates the donor area (usually the back of the scalp) and determines the number of grafts needed. The surgeon designs the desired eyebrow shape based on the patient’s facial features and preferences during the initial consultation. The donor and recipient areas will also be assessed during this consultation.

On the day of surgery, both the donor and recipient areas will be numbed with local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and a painless procedure.

Hair follicles are extracted from the donor area, typically the back of the scalp, using either the FUE (Follicle Unit Extraction) or FUT (Follicle Unit Transplantation) technique. FUE is a more common and less invasive technique as it involves the individual extraction of hair follicles. In this step, after applying anesthesia to the donor area, follicle units are extracted. In this phase of eyebrow transplantation, multiple grafts are needed which are extracted using various techniques depending on the procedure. This often involves shaving a small area of the scalp to obtain the grafts. Unlike other methods that require removing a section of scalp to extract grafts, this method involves extracting individual grafts one by one. This method produces more natural results.

The extracted grafts are carefully prepared under a microscope to ensure follicle viability. The procedure starts with the injection of anesthesia to the eyebrow. In this step, an implant pen is used to place grafts in the natural direction of the eyebrow, following the pen’s angle.

Next, the prepared grafts are carefully implanted into the recipient areas, following the natural growth pattern of the eyebrows. Single hair follicle grafts are usually used to achieve a more natural appearance.

After the implantation procedure, the surgeon will present the post-surgery care instructions to you. You must follow these instructions which are for ensuring an appropriate recovery and lessening the risk of infection or side effects.

In the upcoming weeks after the procedure, you might experience redness, swelling and scabbing in the implant areas. These effects are temporary and should subside after the eyebrows have recovered.

Recovery and Post-Implantation Care

Following eyebrow implantation, the area is dressed so that the connection of the hairs and the hair tissue is ensured and complications are minimized. You must also pay attention to the doctor’s advice and care instructions for a quick recovery. For instance, avoid direct sunlight for two months and refrain from touching, rubbing, or shaving the area for one month. Also, the dressing on the donor and the recipient area should remain untouched for two days therefore there is no need to clean or change the dressing throughout this time. When the dressing is removed from the donor area by the doctor, this area must be washed with utmost care.

A special liquid will be prescribed, which should be sprayed on the eyebrows and the recipient area every 2 to 3 hours. You must pay attention not to touch the skin remnants or the blood clots that are seen on the eyebrows after the surgery.

Pay attention to avoid hookah, cigarettes and alcoholic drinks within a couple of months after eyebrow implantation, and you must seriously refrain from picking the implanted eyebrows within at least 15 days after the implantation.

Hair for eyebrow implantation is sourced from the scalp using FUT and FUE methods. Eyebrow implantation is a procedure that involves transplanting hair follicles from one part of the body to the eyebrow area. Similar to hair transplantation, this procedure is performed under local anesthesia with a strong emphasis on safety and minimizing invasiveness. Eyebrow implantation is an effective way to improve the appearance of eyebrows that are thin or sparse due to various reasons such as genetics, age, over-plucking and medical conditions.

Eyebrow implantation methods

Eyebrow transplantation using the latest FUT and FUE techniques can be performed with any eyebrow shape you desire and is completed in just 5 hours. This is an outpatient procedure that does not require anesthesia. After the transplantation, there is no need for rest, and you can return to your daily activities the next day.

During the transplantation, the client remains fully conscious, allowing us to design the eyebrows according to their preferences. With these two methods, the hair grafting is completely natural and aligns perfectly with the original hair growth direction, so much so that clients are often amazed by the results, feeling as if they have always had naturally full and flawless eyebrows.

FUE is a non-surgical eyebrow implantation technique suitable for both men and women. In this technique, hair extraction is not done in stripes, rather each hair is picked by a machine or through the punch technique from the donor area and implanted to the eyebrows.

Compared to other eyebrow implantation techniques, FUE is less invasive, resulting in a shorter recovery period. Patients can often resume their daily activities shortly after the procedure. Also, after the eyebrow implantation with the FUE technique, there will not be any type of scar left on the eyebrows.

FUT is one of the oldest eyebrow implantation techniques. This method involves removing a strip of hair, typically from the back of the scalp, and transplanting it to the eyebrow area.

The removal process in this technique is faster than the FUE technique and the hairs that are obtained are longer. While strip hair transplantation is a popular method, it’s not suitable for eyebrow implantation. In this method, the eyebrows lose their natural appearance and get an unruly form. Also, removing and stitching are involved in the FUT technique which is why it needs a longer recovery period.
